30+ Things for non-skiers to do in Chamonix Mont Blanc

Chamonix is known as the extreme sports capital of the world, with a seemingly endless list of high-octane, high adrenaline sports and backcountry skiing itineraries. But what if you aren’t that extreme, don’t ski, want to enjoy some more relaxing activities or simply take in the views?

From a calming yoga session on the mountain top to racing through the night to get to an Italian mountain restaurant on the back of a skidoo, there’s something to suit every taste and budget, both here in Chamonix and in neighbouring Italy and Switzerland.

Here’s our pick of the best activities and things to do in the area if you don’t ski.

HuskiesHusky Rides

This is hands down the most popular winter activity for non-skiers in the Chamonix valley. Head out into the mountains on your own husky sleigh, either as the driver of your own sledge or travel as a passenger with a musher. Enjoy the breathtaking mountain scenery as you speed along specially marked out paths in the forest. Contact us to book.

Aiguille du Midi

Chamonix’s number 1 tourist attraction is the Aiguille du Midi, which you can visit on a two-stage cable car. You’ll be whisked up to 3842 metres above sea level, where you can get panoramic views of Mont Blanc from the terraces and look back on the Chamonix Valley, way down below. From here you can watch skiers and mountaineers descending the arete onto the infamous Valley Blanche or heading up to climb to the summit of Mont Blanc. At the mid-way change over for the cable cars, you can go parapenting (more on this below).

Step into the Void

Also at the Aiguille du Midi is a thrilling experience “Step into the Void” where you can step into a glass box, suspended 1000 metres above a drop over the rock faces below. You can access this via the summit elevator at the very top of the Midi for some truly unforgettable views (if you’re brave enough!)

Mer de Glace

Experience the best views of France’s longest glacier at the Montenvers – Mer de Glace site. Take the iconic rack and pinion train from Chamonix centre all the way to the top at 1913m, from where you can descend by cable car and around 400 steps to visit the ice cave within the glacier. There are a couple of restaurants, a mountain refuge and a gift shop up here as well as a glacier exhibit and crystal gallery.

Tramway du Mont Blanc

Chamonix has another famous rack and pinion train line, this time down in Les Houches, connecting the town of St Gervais with this part of the Chamonix Valley. The Tramway du Mont Blanc normally opens for winter in mid December and it’s more popular for non-mountaineering visitors to take a ride to enjoy the fantastic views, or to access some of the snowshoeing routes in this area. It stays open until the beginning of April – weather permitting of course.

Paret GMParet descents

A great activity for groups of friends, where you take the last lift of the day up to Grands Montets ski area mid station, and slide all the way down the home run on traditional wooden ‘paret’ sledges. Great fun for anyone over 12 years old and for groups.  Contact us to book.

Italian snowmobilesItalian snowmobile adventure

Paragliging 2Paragliding

See the Chamonix valley from a totally different perspective, 1000 metres above the ground on a tandem paragliding flight. After a short running take off, the wing lifts you and your pilot from the ground and you fly across the valley to enjoy some truly spectacular views. There are various take off points around the valley and different prices may apply for each location. If you’re lucky you may be allowed to take the controls.. Contact us to book.

Helicopter flightsHelicopter flights

Soar over Chamonix’s glaciers and see the impressive mountains of the Mont Blanc Massif from the comfort of a 6-seater helicopter. Our 3 Favourite Off-Piste Experiences for Skier & Snowboarders in Chamonix

It might have been a bit slow to start but with the arrival of a few massive dumps of snow recently, this winter is now looking pretty amazing!

So much snow fell last week that the pisteurs at Les Grands Montets were gob-smacked and have been hard at work ever since making the ski areas safe and avalanche-free for us to enjoy.

Pisteurs securing the ski area at Les Grands Montets in Chamonix

However, the late and sudden arrival of the snow unfortunately makes for fairly unsteady conditions up in the mountains. The avalanche risk has been consistently high and although there is huge temptation is to go ripping through the powder at every opportunity, mountain guides and pisteurs are advising everyone to be cautious and to ski or snowboard safely – especially if you are thinking of going off-piste.

Off-piste ski course with Chamonix Experience mountain guides

The Chamonix backcountry has so much to offer and there is fantastic off-piste terrain to discover. An ideal way to explore, and to learn essential safety skills, is by doing an off-piste course. Here are our top three…

All Mountain – one of our favourites, this 3 day course takes you all over the Grands Montets into bowls, gullies and powder fields where you’ll learn how to ride off-piste, make steep turns, attack moguls and handle bad conditions such as ice and hardpack. Your guide will seek out the best places for the conditions and teach you how to master the mountain like a boss. Split over 3 half days at 195€ per person, this is ideal preparation for doing the Vallée Blanche – your guide will let you know if you are ready to do it.
Book All Mountain Here

Off-Piste & Freeride – we’re not saying “don’t go off-piste”, it’s far too much fun to miss out on! You’ll have an even better time if you go with a pro and learn how to shred the pow and find the best stashes. Our freeride and off-piste courses go from half days to full weeks for everyone from complete beginners to experienced powder hounds. Starting from just 69€ they are definitely worth it, you’ll experience Chamonix in a whole new light.
Book Off-Piste & Freeride Here

Avalanche Awareness – learn invaluable skills and have a great off-piste experience. If you want to explore then you need to learn how to do it safely, especially with the snowpack being as unstable as it is this winter. This half-day course will take you into the mountains and teach you the basics of assessing the snow conditions, evaluating the avalanche risk, carrying out a search using a transceiver and what to do if the worst happens. At just 69€ per person it’s an investment that you’ll use every time you go off-piste. We also offer longer courses for those who want to learn more about avalanche, off-piste and glacier safety.

Once you’ve mastered the techniques of off-piste skiing you’ll be ready to tackle the Vallée Blanche – Chamonix’s most famous off-piste run. Riding the lift up to the summit of the Aiguille du Midi at 3842m, stepping out through the ice tunnel onto the arete, skiing down amongst the seracs and crevasses of the Mont Blanc Massif – it is an unbeatable experience for any confident skier or snowboarder.

Ski the Vallee Blanche from the Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix

The Vallée Blanche is not technically a difficult route, it is often compared to being no harder than your average red piste, which is why it is so accessible even to those who don’t have huge off-piste experience. It is glacial terrain though, which is why it is essential to only ever ski the Vallee Blanche with a guide. Glaciers constantly shift and evolve, with crevasses opening up and changing shape with every different weather pattern. This is why none of our mountain guides would ever compromise your safety by taking you down if they thought that conditions were too bad or that you weren’t ready to tackle it.

We also have a ton of other options to offer such as private ski/snowboard guiding, off-piste lessons for everyone from beginners to experiences skiers/snowboarders, longer ski tours with overnight accommodation in mountain refuges, snowshoe treks and so on. Please visit our website or contact us for more details.

The Chamonix ski slopes are now in great condition and the next few days look like they’re going be as glorious as today’s webcam image from Flegere…

We get a lot of calls and emails asking us what the snow’s like – you can see for yourself with the daily video snow report, live webcams and local weather forecasts on our Chamonix Snow & Weather page.

Hello winter! Getting our ski legs back with a private ski lesson

Even folks who are lucky enough to live in Chamonix can benefit from a few tips to improve their skiing. This is what happened when a member of the Mountain Lifestyle team took a private lesson with Chamonix ski instructor Rachel Kerr…

Living in Chamonix for the last six years, I have firmly resided in the snowboarding camp, so last winter I was ready for a new challenge on the mountain, and having skied as a child decided to revisit life on 2 planks instead of 1. I wasn’t quite the complete beginner, but my sketchy technique from 25 years ago was certainly in need of some “fine tuning” from an expert.

12322843_887431241347581_4015209336478610302_oRachel Kerr, independent ski instructor, based in Chamonix for the last eleven years, was the perfect choice for my private half day lesson. Collecting me from home on a cold, cloudy, snowy morning, we headed straight for Grands Montets “for the best visibility”. On the way to the mountain we chatted about what I wanted to achieve from my lesson, and any previous experience I may have had.

Heading up together in the lift, Rachel assessed my equipment, made a few small adjustments, and we were off! Through a series of practical exercises, we made our way from the top of the Bochard to the bottom of the home run stopping every couple of minutes to fine tune and practice the moves and explain why they were important to improve my skiing.

10888467_729637287126978_358188656103605977_nWith Rachel making regular adjustments and encouragements, the varied terrain at Grands Montets tested all aspects of my technique and ability. Her years of experience in teaching really shone through in how she broke down and explained every aspect of what was required in terms of weight distribution and body positioning, which as a snowboarder is quite a different discipline.

As a result of her positivity and constant encouragement my confidence grew. By the time I reached the end of our 3 hour lesson, I had been skiing on one ski at a time, making speed stops, begun to master the finer points of parallel turns, and was happily flying around Grands Montets’ red runs, albeit with burning thigh muscles. I definitely deserved my chocolat chaud at the bottom!!

Taking on board everything I learnt in only a few hours, I was raring to go again to try out my new found techniques and confidence. I skied almost as much as I snowboarded last winter, and by the end of the winter season had invested in new ski equipment, and am raring to get back onto the mountain this winter!
