Welcome to Mountain Lifestyle’s first ever blog post – we’ll be bringing you all the latest from Chamonix; snow conditions, kit reviews, scurrilous gossip (if there isn’t any, we’ll make some up) events and news.

Charming little chalet with the best view ever

As for what’s going on right now… not much, it’s October, right? WRONG! Well, no, you’re right, it is October, but there’s plenty going on anyway. We’ve had glorious weather recently and the trails are in great condition for hiking, the snow line has melted back up to 2500m and there are still a few lifts open. The colours are beyond beautiful at the moment, the whole valley looks like it’s been Photoshopped with deep vibrant autumn colours popping against fresh white peaks and bright blue sky.

The skies are brightly dotted with parapentes, flying conditions appear to be pretty good at the moment. Get in touch with us if you fancy having a go yourself, it’s a pretty special way to see the valley.

Everyone loves snow

The fine weather is set to continue but we’ve definitely noticed a crisp chill in the mornings that signals winter is just around the corner – and we’re ready for it! We had a light dusting of snow this week, which prompted an avalanche of Facebook updates and photos of white blurry things. Plenty of folk have been skiing from the Aiguille Du Midi and reports are that the snow conditions are pretty good up there – if you’re going to venture up then make sure you call into the Office de Haute Montagne in the centre of town first to get the latest weather and snow reports from the experts. Unless you’re well very acquainted with the terrain you should also look into hiring a mountain guide – glaciers shift constantly, opening up new dangers as the seasons change, it’s absolutely stunning up there and going with a guide can make a world of difference between a great day out or an absolute nightmare. Play safe!

Tonight is one of the best nights of the year in Chamonix – Halloween! If there’s one thing we do really well, it’s fancy dress. Most people I know have more fancy dress outfits in their wardrobes than actual fancy dresses. There are so many parties tonight that the only way to fit them all in is by embarking on a bar crawl of epic proportions – the route will be based somewhat optimistically around Vagabond, Monkey, MBC, Elevation and Bar’d Up for starters with anything else being a bonus. Have a great weekend, see you on the other side…
